Texas often gets stereotyped as a state full of cowboys, ranches and gun-slinging shootouts. And, while the more populated, urban parts of the state defy this stereotype, it’s fun to embrace it on occasion. This March, the 76th annual Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo provides the perfect opportunity for doing so, with 23 days of authentic western fun. Located in east Austin near 183 North, the annual event brings western sports, livestock shows, live music, concessions and more to the people of Central Texas.

Rodeo Austin begins Friday, March 8th and continues daily until March 23rd. The family-friendly event is packed with activities for the young and old alike, making it the perfect weekend or Spring Break activity to you and your family. Tickets to the fairgrounds are $7 for adults, and $4 for kids, but there is much more to the event, available at a small additional charge. The main attraction of Rodeo Austin is, of course, the ProRodeo – the 5th largest indoor, regular season rodeo in the country. The rodeo events occur each night at 7:00 p.m. and performances include 7 exciting western events including Bareback Riding, Steer Wrestling, Tie-Down Roping, Barrel Racing and more. Live music performances follow the Rodeo events, and are included in the ticket price, which ranges from $25 to $175 depending on the seats. Bands performing after the rodeo include Eli Young Band, Sara Evans, Alabama Shakes, Merle Haggard and Three Dog Night among others. A full line up of concerts at the rodeo are available online.

In addition to the rodeo and live music events, there are countless other authentic western activities available at the rodeo this year, including fair food, shopping, livestock shows, and a carnival. The carnival features tons of rides and activities, and is available for rodeo-goers at an additional charge. Online, a day full of unlimited rides and fun is $27 for adults, $24 for children, while tickets are $32 and $29 at the gate. On March 8th though, carnival rides are only $1 and parking is free!

Other events and activities at the rodeo include livestock shows, a BBQ cook off, a K9 high-flying, dog trick action show, pig races and a gun-slinging western showdown. Food and shopping are available as well. Think typical fair food: funnel cakes, nachos, corndogs, candy apples, turkey legs, and FRIED KOOL AID. Yes, we said it.

So, if you’re looking for some good, family-friendly fun this March, head north to Austin for a day full of western events and activities. Yeehaw!
